The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is an AC electric motor that uses permanent magnets in the rotor instead of electromagnetic windings, resulting in high efficiency, power density, and a high torque-to-inertia ratio. These motors require complex, digitally controlled inverters for operation and are used in high-performance applications such as robotics, electric vehicles, and high-efficiency appliances like washing machines.

Rotor:
Unlike induction motors, the rotor is equipped with permanent magnets (often neodymium), not wound coils, which eliminates rotor current and associated losses.

Stator:
Similar to a conventional AC motor, the stator has windings that, when supplied with alternating current, create a rotating magnetic field.

Synchronous Speed:
The magnetic field of the rotor locks to the stator’s rotating magnetic field, causing the rotor to turn at exactly the same speed (synchronous speed).

Control:
PMSMs require a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) or digital controller, often implementing advanced algorithms such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC), to properly energize the stator windings and manage speed and torque.

Brushless Design:
The absence of brushes contributes to high reliability, low maintenance, and quiet operation.

Advantages:

High Efficiency:
Permanent magnets in the rotor eliminate energy losses in the rotor, and their higher power density means they can operate more efficiently than asynchronous (induction) motors.

High Power Density:
They provide a high power-to-volume and torque-to-inertia ratio, allowing for more compact and lighter designs with greater torque.

Precise Control:
They deliver accurate and smooth speed and torque control across the entire speed range, including at zero speed.
