The da Vinci S 2000 HD Surgical System integrates 3D HD endoscopy
and cutting-edge robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon's eyes
and hands into the surgical field.
Only the da Vinci system enables new minimally invasive options
for complex surgical procedures.

OPERATION: THE OPERATING SYSTEM
• The operating system itself requires only three small incisions,
measuring 8 to 12 mm, to introduce two instrument-carrying arms
and a camera into a patient's body. Only the robot and the assistant operators look
at the patient, while the surgeon controls the system which reproduces aspects
of a real operation with great precision from the console located elsewhere
in the operating room.

• The da Vinci S HD surgical robot is intended to integrate perfectly
into the operating room and to best assist the intervention team,
in the same way as any other participant in the operation.
The system consists of three main components: the operating console,
a mobile instrument holder installed next to the operating table
and an image processing module.

• The core of the da Vinci S 2000 HD surgical system is the control console
from which the surgeon controls the operation at all times.
Tests carried out with other types of techniques using a video transmission system
have demonstrated less effectiveness.
The main challenge for surgeons was getting to grips
with reversing the movements – a bit like tying your shoes with chopsticks.
Indeed, if you move the chopsticks to the left, their tips move to the right.
The classic counterintuitive movements of standard laparoscopy work exactly this way.
Surgeons therefore had to gradually learn these counterintuitive movements
by repeating them.

• Using the da Vinci S HD operating system ,
the surgeon can perform the operation while sitting at a control console,
while observing the surgical field using a high-definition 3D visualization system
with even higher resolution unrivaled.
The world's first surgical robot equipped
with a high-resolution 3D HD representation system,
it has a display with twice the resolution of older models,
and whose image is sharper and represents more detail tissue layers
and critical structures.
The InSite™ optical device, the high-resolution 3D HD endoscope
and the image processing module deliver realistic images
of the intervention area.
Thanks to image synchronization, extremely intense light sources
and camera control modules, the images of the operation are amplified,
refined and optimized.

• Also on the operating console, the surgeon carries
out movements using master elements
(control elements reproducing the movements carried out during the operation).
He grasps the master control elements below the display with his fingers,
with his wrists in a natural position for the eye. Its movements are then immediately
translated into precise movements, in real time,
and thus transmitted to the instruments acting in the patient's body.

• The robot arms, carrying the surgical instruments, are controlled
by movements of the wrist, hand and fingers similar to those
of the classic operating technique.
An extensive range of EndoWrist™ instruments are available
for this system. These endoscopic instruments inspired
by the human wrist have seven degrees of freedom of movement.
Each instrument is designed for a specific task, such as stapling,
sewing or handling fabrics.

• The trolley placed next to the operating table carries the two robotic arms
and the endoscopic arm, which reproduce the operator's movements.
It is possible to install a third robotic arm, available as an option.
This allows the surgeon to use an additional endoscopic instrument,
which thus makes other operating options available.
Since the pivot point of laparoscopic instruments is close to the operating incisions,
the patient's abdominal wall no longer serves as a leverage point.
Damage to tissues and nerves is thus minimized.
Assistants install the required instruments, prepare to introduce the probes
into the patient's body, and monitor the laparoscopic arms
and instruments used during the procedure.

• The most complex operations are performed
with the da Vinci™S 2000 HD surgical system , which allows surgeons
to perform minimally invasive procedures.
Thanks to the advanced technologies used in the control of movements,
the surgical instruments are able to work with extreme calm and precision,
as the hand of a very experienced surgeon would do – even
with extremely slow movements .
